The increased penetration of UCC—the reasons and results

04 January 2021

Approximately 50 percent of businesses are now using UCC solutions (up from 31 percent in 2016)—the technology is not only well accepted, it’s considered mainstream. And the market for UCC technology keeps growing. The UCC solutions market is projected to rise to $60 billion by 2025 (it was at $32 billion in 2018), according to a Global Market Insights, Inc. report published last year.

What’s driving the growth

  • The sudden expansion in remote work/study—With most workforces operating virtually over the past several months, digital communication and collaboration tools have never been in greater demand. There’s been a pressing need for multi-user connectivity to enable web conferencing among employees in various locations. With travel and in-person meetings severely curtailed, online meetings have become standard operating procedure—and companies are learning they can be every bit as effective as meeting face-to-face in the same room.
  • The increasing demand for medical emergency response and telemedicine services in the healthcare industry—UCC has enabled a sea change in the way health care is administered for critical illnesses as well as routine examinations, and patients and practitioners alike are embracing the new paradigm.
  • The improvement in UCC capabilities—Vendors continue to make advancements in UCC hardware and software, resulting in increased bandwidth, uptime and dependability that enable companies and consumers to realize the true potential of UCC technology.
  • UCaaS solutions driving down the cost of entry—Businesses of all sizes are discovering the efficiencies of adopting cloud-based communications platforms, which eliminate the need to invest in and maintain costly technology on the premises. A study conducted by Nemertes last year found that 67% of the organizations surveyed are deploying at least part of their UCC in the cloud, and a third have gone all-out in deploying UCaaS.

Adoption and expansion of UCC technology have had a major impact on business. According to an Eastern Management Group survey, companies that adopted UCC on average experienced a 52% increase in workplace productivity—and a 45% increase in business efficiency, which translated into a 25% increase in operating profit.
